The Hebrew word Shalom (שלום) isn’t just a word or one word with one meaning. It has a multitude of meanings, some of which are very important. When I started looking into the many uses and meanings of Shalom, I purposely started using this word in my every day life. I wish people “Shalom” when I say good bye to them. I greet many with “Shalom” and I also finish emails and letters with this word.
Some of you have asked me why and so I wanted to use this blog post to explain my “obsessive” usage of the word “Shalom”:
Below are the many usages of the word:
Shalom – שלום
completeness, soundness, welfare, peace
completeness (in number)
safety, soundness (in body)
welfare, health, prosperity
peace, quiet, tranquillity, contentment
peace, friendship
of human relationships
with God especially in covenant relationship
peace (from war)
peace (as adjective)
A word in the New Testament (in Koiné Greek) that comes very close to the meanings of Shalom is the word soteria:
soteria – σωτηρία
deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation
deliverance from the molestation of enemies
in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the souls safety or salvation
of Messianic salvation
Why am I showing this to you? I believe these two words show so much of the personality of God and also show what His Holy Spirit provides in us for us and through us for everyone, every situation and every room around us.
When we’re being encouraged to be salt and light in the Gospel of Matthew 5:13-16, this is not just in relation to our speech and behaviour, but very much about our spiritual presence through God’s Holy Spirit living in us and working through us.
I’ve been in situations quite a few times where people have commented how my presence in a room has made a difference in their mood or anxieties were calmed down, etc. Total strangers have approached me during travels and started chatting to me as if I was a long lost friend and sometimes shared quite deep and intimate worries or topics with me. I was able to provide a prayer of blessing, sometimes a question that would lead them further in their search or even invite Papa God for a direct encounter right there and then.
The covenant of salvation and peace that we have received through Christ Jesus provides complete wholeness with nothing missing, nothing broken. Isaiah 53:5 said the chastisement necessary to bring us this wholeness was laid upon Jesus. His peace encompasses every area of our life.
Shalom and also soteria are so widely reaching and complex. I’m amazed again and again that one word can mean so much.
So when I greet YOU with Shalom, I purposely bless YOU with God’s full measure of completeness, soundness, welfare, peace, safety, health, prosperity, quiet, tranquillity, contentment, friendship, deliverance, safety, salvation and everything else He has for YOU.

Das hebräische Wort Schalom (שלום) ist nicht nur ein Wort oder ein Wort mit nur einer einzigen Bedeutung. Es hat eine Vielzahl an Bedeutungen und die meisten sind sehr wichtig. Als ich begann mich mit den vielen Bedeutungen von Schalom zu beschäftigen begann ich auch das Wort absichtlich so oft wie möglich in meinem Alltag zu gebrauchen. Ich verabschiede mich von vielen Menschen mit dem Wort “Schalom”. Ich grüße andere mit dem gleichen Wort und auch meine Emails und Briefe werden mit diesem Wort beendet.
Einige von euch haben das hinterfragt und ich dachte ich nutze diesen Blog Artikel um mein (von einigen als zwanghaft verschimpfte) Verhalten zu erklären.
Zunächst ein paar Bedeutungen des Wortes “Schalom”:

Ein Wort aus dem Neuen Testament (in Koiné Griechisch) kommt der Bedeutung des Wortes Schalom auch sehr nahe. Es ist das Wort soteria:
soteria – σωτηρία
Befreiung, Erhaltung, Sicherheit, Errettung
Befreiung von der Belästigung der Feinde
in einem ethischen Sinne, auch Rettung und Sicherheit für die Seele
Messianische Rettung
Weshalb zeige ich dir das? Ich glaube dieses Worte zeigen deutlich wieviel von Gottes Persönlichkeit da drin steckt und was der Heilige Geist in uns bereit hält für uns und für jede Person, jede Situation und jeden Raum um uns herum.
Im Evangelium nach Matthäus, Kapitel 5, die Verse 13 bis 16 werden wir dazu ermutigt Salz und Licht zu sein. Da geht es nicht nur um unser Reden und Handeln. Aber auch sehr um unsere geistliche Präsenz, welche durch das Wirken des Heiligen Geistes in uns und um uns herum vorhanden ist.
Ich bin schon oft in Situationen gewesen, in denen fremde Leute einen Kommentar gemacht haben wie “meine Anwesenheit” im Raum einen Unterschied gemacht hat. Ihre Stimmung wurde erhellt, Ängste überwunden und noch mehr. Völlig fremde Menschen haben mich auf Reisen angesprochen und mit mir geredet als wären wir Freunde die sich nach langer Zeit wieder sahen. Manche teilten sogar sehr persönliche Geschichten und Sorgen mit mir. Es war mir dann möglich denen zu dienen durch anleitende Fragen, einem Segensgebet oder auch einer Einladung direkt dort Gott zu erleben und zu begegnen.
Der Vertrag der Errettung und des Friedens welchen wir durch Christus erhalten haben gibt uns volle Fülle und nichts fehlt, nichts ist zerbrochen. Jesaja 53, Vers 5 zeigt auf, dass Christus für unsere Wunden geschlagen wurde. Sein Friede durchdringt jedes Gebiet unseres Lebens unseres Seins.
Schalom und auch soteria reichen so weit und sind so vielfältig. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, dass ein einziges Wort so viel bedeuten kann.
Also wenn ich dich das nächste Mal mit Schalom grüße, segne ich DICH absichtlich mit Gottes vollem Maß an Vollständigkeit, Unversehrtheit, Wohlergehen, Friede, Sicherheit, Gesundheit, Wohlstand, Ruhe, Beschaulichkeit, Zufriedenheit, Freundschaft, Befreiung, Errettung und allem anderen was Er für DICH hat.
